Energy Improvements

Rising energy prices and the desire to reduce our carbon footprint has led us to embark on a program of continuous reduction in our need to purchase fossil fuels.

Project What we did Cost/Benefits
Wood burning stove

Installed a Scan wood-burning stove to be the primary heat source for the main living area of the house. Total cost about $4500 including installation.  Since we installed it the main propane heater in the house rarely operates, although house temperatures are usually in the 60's.
Winterized garage/workshop

We added insulation to a thin wall and to bare concrete walls, plus covered bare earth with fiberglass batts. The garage door was replaced with an insulated exterior door. Total cost was about $2000, but the State of Alaska will rebate much of it.  The workshop heater runs much less often.
Insulate Exposed floors

Floors in the Master bedroom, Living room, and Arctic Entry had open floor joists with a thin coating of foam.  These were insulated with fiberglass and sealed with Tyvek and plywood. Total cost was about $800, but the State of Alaska will rebate much of it.  We can't tell the difference at the moment but know it has helped..
